About
The 808 Scene Zine is an online and print publication that focuses on Hawaii's local music scene. Our primary goal is to get more people interested in local music and bands while at the same time providing useful advice and information for our local musicians. We also regularly interview people about their tattoos just because we think tattoos are cool and no other publications are doing. While the zine covers all genres of music, we tend to focus on rock, punk, ska, indie, & hip hop - the genres of music that get very little mainstream media attention here in Hawaii. The zine was started in February 2006 by creator and editor Katie Whitman. Back then, it was a black and white publication (Katie didn't even realize you could make multiple columns on a page until issue #7!) with a distribution of 1000 and folded and stapled by friends bribed with pizza and movies. Now the zine has grown to a publication printed professionally by Trade Publishing and designed by professional graphic designers. Our current staff is a volunteer crew of writers, photographers, graphics designers, and distributors. The 808 Scene Zine is still as grassroots as it gets, but with an attractive and professional presentation that draws new readers which we hope will only help the music scene grow!
