CONTACT jomojo@hawaii.rr.com

Growing up, I have always had a great appreciation of the many forms and capabilities of the whole animal kingdom, both real and fantasy. Over time I also have developed an infatuation with eastern art and eastern spirituality.

In my works my love for these things are expressed and explored. Using ceramic slab building techniques to render the forms. Then over the un fired green ware I use stains and glazes, in a tattoo style to paint detailed creatures and scenes of both dark and light persuasions. To finish the works anything from hand made claws, cactus spines, horsehair, thorns or fishhooks are added to highlight natural features.

LOCATION
Honolulu, Hawaii

BORN
August 27, 1978
Glenwood Springs, Colorado

EDUCATION
Primarily self-taught, a class in hand building taught by well-known Artist Esther Shimazu. Then, two three-day workshops, one instructed by Sergei Isupov and the other by Michael Sherrill, both of the Penland School of Crafts. “All though short lessons, they were very informative and inspiring.” Specific individuals who had significant influence on his development include My Momma, Jo Rowley, Esther Shimazu, Cade and Waileia Roster, Mary Levins Calabrese, May Izumi and Sergei Isupov.

D

top

About the Artist:

You might know this month’s artist by his DJ name, DMuthaphukinD, the shortened PG version, DMFD, or simply as D. If you’re in a band and you ever played at The Wave, then he was the guy behind the sound board. D is well-known in the local music scene, but few know that he is also a talented artist with a passion for Celtic knotwork.

Interested in his heritage, D tracked his roots to Ireland and Scotland (also a hodge-podge of Asian and Pacific Islander), evidenced by his reddish beard. This connection with the ancient Celts lead to his fascination with their art.

Not only does D do the art, he has an extensive knowledge of the history, discussing the evolution of Celtic designs and expressing the opinion that Beowulf would make the most kick-ass movie ever.

He is looking for an apprentice to help color his plethora of drawings and is also interested to know if anyone else on the island is doing similar art (beyond that solely for the purpose of tattoos).
If you’d like to commission D to draw a design for you or are interested in working with him, call 808-218-0701.

About the Artist:
From a very early age I’ve been obsessed with cameras. Its so amazing to get to do what I’m most passionate about in life for a living. Having recently graduated with my fine arts degree in photography from the University of Hawaii, I am having fun exploring the field and working in all sorts of photo related jobs.

Malia also organizes art shows, like the 666 show (with co-organizer Michelle) at Mercury (1154 Fort Street Mall) up for viewing until the end of July.

I, N8 Nachtigall am a student of Photography. I base all my work on basic views of Culture (in all forms that I can capture). I also throw my Complex ideals in some.
I went to Europe 4 years ago (2002), and the rich culture engulfed me and I am yearning to go back. In order to subdue the yearn, I have been finding some of the culture of modern Honolulu, East side of Oahu (and other places as well). I have been finding the best way to capture these moments which are displayed before me or in my mind.

ARTIST - NABAHE (from IndieHonolulu.com)

top

Nabahe is a local artist and musician. On which he likes the best:

I like doing art. It’s my first love but I always will have a place for hip-hop/music. Kind of like when you have a girlfriend and a side wack and you’re fucking them both. Then you begin to fall for your side wack. Art, (my first love), I like because I can do it and I never have to think. My hand usually does its thing. I can draw and draw and paint and paint, even if it comes out like shit, I love doing it. Music, (my side wack), on the other hand takes a lot more thinking for me. Givin the fact I have no real rhythm. I’m always off time in the studio and shit. I really spend most of my time thinking a lot about word placing and even pronouncing words when producing my music. It’s really hard when I studder or slur my words on an everyday basis. But I love my wife and my hoe.....

Who are your influences both in music and in art?
Art: I have to say Disney cartoons to Chaka and c.b.s. graff writers. Music: the Doors, Rolling Stones, T.V. On the Radio, Pigeon John, Circle Jerks, Minute Men, Elliot Smith. My group members (Black Empty) have a real big impression on me also.

Golden Chiclets Tied Welcomed Arrival

From the artist:
Art provides a therapeutic satisfaction for me. In everyday life, being creative helps me to differentiate between what’s important to me vs. others. I feel out of place in a lot of situations but at home and at ease when in a creative groove.

My paintings are a combination of elements that include memories, new hopes/dreams and scattered ideas that attempt to capture the “mind” or mood at the time. Attempting to convey my thoughts onto canvas would be the only intention in my work. I paint for self-satisfaction both mentally and visually.

Go to www.jimmykoons.co.uk to see more artwork or to commission a painting of your own.
